Easy 4 miles per dollar: Citi Rewards (with Instarem Amaze)

Min Spend: None
Monthly Cap: S$1,000

One of the easiest cards to use now will have to be the Citi Rewards card which gives 4 miles per dollar mainly on online transactions. A longstanding “hack” is to pair it with Instarem Amaze then use the Amaze card itself to make spending at offline locations. This converts your offline transactions into online ones, effectively giving 4 miles per dollar on all your spend whether it is at retail stores or online shopping.

Citi’s points can also be transferred to a variety of airlines, making its 4 miles per dollar quite a bit better than other cards’ 4 miles per dollar. I’ll elaborate on this in a future piece, so stay subscribed for updates.

The Citi Rewards gives 4 miles per dollar on a maximum of S$1,000 of eligible spend. Incidentally, the Instarem Amaze card also lets you spend up to a S$1,000 in local transactions without a fee. A happy coincidence or not, this combination works really well for many since it gives fuss-free 4 miles per dollar on just about anything except for travel-related expenses and commonly excluded ones like insurance and government services.

Buying miles with Citi PayAll: Citi Prestige / Citi PremierMiles

Min Spend: N/A
Monthly Cap: N/A

Citi Prestige is my go to card for buying miles through Citi PayAll. Citi PayAll is a service that lets you pay for stuff that don’t normally get you any card rewards (think insurance, income tax etc.) but it does charge a fee. Essentially, you are buying miles through this service and during promotional periods, it can make quite a lot of sense because your flight redemptions can become much cheaper. Stay subscribed for updates on Citi PayAll promos and analysis of them.

Besides that, Citi Prestige lets you get free airport transfers up to 8 times a year, get your 4th hotel night free, and give unlimited lounge visits including the ability to bring a guest for free. It’s an excellent card that is well worth its annual fee if you use its card benefits. I have renewed mine for a 3rd year running, and this card has helped me rack up a serious amount of miles plus visit many different airport lounges over the years.

It’s definitely a great card for those who travel more than once a year, though the downside is that there is an annual income requirement of S$120,000. If you wish to apply, there is a great sign-up bonus now, and it works even if you have other Citibank credit cards. Should you not already have one, you can enjoy two sign-up bonuses by signing up in the right order: another Citi card first, followed by Citi Prestige.

Citi PremierMiles can be a replacement of sorts, being also eligible for Citi PayAll. It has the standard regulatory S$30,000 annual income requirement and no compulsory annual fee because you can get a first-year fee waiver with subsequent years easily waived. There is no free airport transfers from this card, though you do get 2 complimentary lounge visits. The sign-up bonus is also pretty insane right now:

Unlimited 3 miles per dollar: KrisFlyer UOB

Min Spend: S$0 per month; at least S$800 on Singapore Airlines transactions within membership year
Monthly Cap: N/A

While 3 miles per dollar is a lower earn rate than 4 miles per dollar, KrisFlyer UOB card is unique as there is no cap to its earn rate. This makes it great for large transactions or people with bigger spending habits where 4 miles per dollar cards max out at S$1,000 to S$2,000 of spending each month.

The requirement is that you need to spend at least S$800 within your membership year on Singapore Airlines Group transactions. Those are transactions on Singapore Airlines, Scoot, or KrisShop. When you do so, eligible spend on dining, online shopping, travel and transportation will be upsized from 1.2 miles per dollar to 3 miles per dollar. You will receive 1.2 miles per dollar first, with the extra 1.8 coming in at the end of your membership year.

4 miles per dollar with Paywave: UOB Preferred Platinum Visa

Min Spend: S$0
Monthly Cap: S$1,110

UOB has a few 4 miles per dollar and UOB Preferred Platinum Visa is one of the easy to use ones. Add the card to your smartphone wallet, and it will give 4 miles per dollar on just about anywhere that accepts contactless payments.

One of the downsides is that it only counts spending in S$5 blocks, so if your spend is S$19.70, it is rounded down to S$15 and you get 60 miles (instead of 76 that other cards would give). This is less of an issue when your transactions are bigger, though quite annoying when your spend is made up of smaller ones throughout the month.

Another card you might want to consider is the UOB Visa Signature. It too gives 4 miles per dollar on contactless payments, but it has a minimum spend of S$1,000 to unlock this earn rate. In exchange, it gives a S$2,000 cap each month.

A smaller spender might appreciate the lack of minimum spend for UOB Preferred Platinum Visa, while those with more expenses would naturally gravitate towards the UOB Visa Signature.

Whichever card you choose, adding the UOB Lady’s card into the mix as a support is also a good idea for certain months where you need more capacity. UOB cards pool their points together, so it doesn’t matter if you earn points on one card or across 3 since you just to manage one account of points.
