Here are 5 excellent cashback cards that not only give you great earn rates, you can also get good welcome offers to go along with the cashback and rebates you can earn. Miles lovers should probably read through the list too – many of these cards can make more sense than the miles cards you love. Stay subscribed also to a list of excellent miles cards to use. Update: here are great miles cards to look at
American Express True Cashback: 1.5% (upsized to 3%) for everything except Grab top-ups
Min. spend: N/A
Max. spend: N/A (max S$5,000 for 3% rate)
While 1.5% isn’t a good earn rate at all, Amex True Cashback has the unique ability to gain rewards on just about anything as long as you are able to find something that allows you to pay with an American Express card. This means anything from school fees and utilities to insurance and road tax which are commonly excluded by other credit cards. The only exclusion here is Grab top-ups – you have to count on UOB Absolute’s paltry 0.3% cashback for that.
Amex acceptance is not as widely found as that of Visa or Mastercard, but it is still common enough that everyone – whether you are a miles or cashback person – should have in their card library just in case.
Your first S$5,000 of spend in the first 6 months gets an upsized 3% earn rate! Check out the welcome promo too:

Citi SMRT: 5% for online spend with no monthly cap!
Min. spend: S$500 per month
Max. spend: S$12,000 per year (S$600 cashback cap)
Citi SMRT is one of the rare few cards giving decent rewards yet doesn’t have a monthly cap to its earn rate. Instead, its 5% cashback rate is capped at S$600 a year which means you can spend as much as S$12,000 on it at one go to get full 5% cashback on that.
Cashback cards often come with relatively low monthly caps, so this is one of the rare ones that don’t have one. In fact, there isn’t a miles card giving 4 miles per dollar or more without a monthly cap.
There is a minimum monthly spend of S$500 for the 5% rate to be given, which shouldn’t be an issue if you are using this for big expenses.

Citi SMRT

Maybank Family and Friends: 8% cashback on 5 out of 10 categories
Min. spend: S$800 per month
Max. spend: S$1,562.50 per month (S$125 cashback cap)
With Maybank Family and Friends, you can get a handsome 8% cashback if you meet S$800 of minimum spend within the month across 5 categories of your choice. There are 10 to pick from, so there should be something for everyone.
Each category is limited to S$25 of cashback per month, which means you shouldn’t be putting more than S$312.50 of spend into each category. If you somehow manage to max out 5 categories, you can get S$125 cashback on S$1,562.50 of spend. On top of this, the card also gives 8% cashback on Ringgit spend – perfect for shopping trips at our neighbouring country. This is also capped at S$25.
To more effectively use this card, look through your monthly expenses to see if you are able to easily meet the requirements each month without much hassle. A family with S$300 of groceries, $200 of gym memberships and S$300 of transportation expenses, for instance, would find this card very easy to use. Someone whose spending habits are more discretionary might find the UOB EVOL a bit easier to use.

DBS yuu: 17.5% rebates
Min. spend: S$600 per month
Max. spend: S$600 per month (capped at 21,000 yuu points worth S$105)
DBS yuu was my pick for Cashback Card of the Year last year and I’ve talked about it quite a bit on this site. Nonetheless, it is here as the rightful top card of a list of awesome cashback cards to get.
Even without hitting the S$600 minimum spend for this card, the earn rate is 4.5% in rebates on participarting yuu merchants like Giant, Cold Storage, foodpanda, gojek, Singtel etc. It balloons to an impressive 17.5% when the minimum spend is met, and even after that continues to give 4.5% rebates.
I think it is worth using even if you can’t put all S$600 spend on yuu merchants. If you spend S$300 on yuu merchants and S$300 on other stuff, your effective yield is still 9% in rebates (blended rate of 17.5% on S$300 and 0.5% on non-yuu merchants) which is still significantly higher than other cards available.

DBS yuu Card
DBS yuu Card is an excellent card that gives up to 18% cash rebates or 10 miles per dollar (in conjunction with the yuu app)
