Minstant Now Available For Download – Here Are the Best New Features I Found
Minstant is finally out for public usage and you can now download the app right now for your iPhone or Android thingy from their respective app stores. As usual, the app is completely free of charge and all you need is to create an account which takes just seconds especially if you are signing in with your Facebook, Apple, or Google accounts.

Merchant Category Code Lookup
Due to popular demand, Minstant has added Merchant Category Codes (MCC) to the different retail shops listed on its platform. MCCs are a 4-digit code that is tagged to each store you buy things from, and it dictates the kind of rewards you get from your credit card.
umisushi, for instance, certainly looks like it should earn you rewards from your Maybank Family and Friends card. As an eatery selling Japanese cuisine, it seems like it belongs under 5812 (Restaurants or Eating Places), but it is actually 5814 (Fast Food Restaurants). This is not supported by Maybank Family and Friends which gives its 8% cashback rate on 5812 and not 5814.
Minstant knows this, telling you that you will only get 0.3% cashback for this place. This makes the app useful for those not so in tuned with credit cards because they can just rely on the app to recommend something suitable. For veteran credit card chasers, the app now surfaces the underlying MCC so that they can react accordingly.
To see the MCC of a particular store, tap on the info button on the upper right corner of each retailer.
Advanced Search
Another great feature the app has added is its Advanced Search feature. As the name suggests, this is search that’s… more advanced. It does live up to its name when I put it to the test, giving me results that I want and then some more stuff I didn’t know I needed.
For instance, when searching “Singtel”, not only are you presented with a list of Singtel related shops, you are also shown a relevant article on how to pay your Singtel bills. I think that this is a useful article to be shown when one searches for Singtel, not only because I wrote it, but also because it gives you more context and knowledge that you might not otherwise know.
You can also search for “5311” and see a list of nearby retailers that matches this MCC. Certainly useful if you have a card like say the HSBC Live+ that gives its generous 8% cashback on 5311 transactions.
New card HSBC Live+ already included
Talking about the HSBC Live+, Minstant is also very up to date on including new cards. HSBC’s latest cashback card is barely a month old and the app has already included it. I may be wrong, but it seems like it’s the first and still the only app of its kind that has included the new card.
There’s still some work to be done of course, with UOB EVOL currently listed as an “8% cashback” card. While I largely overlooked the misleading 8% figure back when UOB EVOL could give an effective 6.7% cashback, the app will need to do some updating. Not only does the app need to reflect the latest changes, it has to find a way to cut through very, very optimistic marketing numbers and present users with the realistic earn rate of each card.
Browse by Category
While early incarnations of the app only showed retailers near the user, the latest version allows one to browse by categories. This is immensely useful to answer perennially important questions like “eh eat what ah” with a quick list of dining options sorted by distance.
The app even reads my mind that “fine dining” should be its separate category, and if they wish to improve this feature they can even include price tiers within each category.
There are also many other types of categories available, showing you relevant retailers and articles for stuff like travel, fashion, fuel and more.
