Finally: Instarem Amaze Adds Apple Pay Support
After years of not supporting iPhone’s wallet app, Instarem Amaze can now be added to Apple Pay. This is a much welcomed feature that not only offers more convenience, but opens up possibilities that were once not possible on Apple’s devices.

“Supplementary” card for multiplayer support
Having Apple Pay support allows a single card to be used across different people at the same time. With just a single physical card before, it wasn’t possible to share your Instarem Amaze with another person unless they are using an Android device.
For those with multiple players in the game of chasing credit card rewards, this is useful for a variety of reasons such as consolidating spending on a single card across different people or lending your card to someone else. Previously, this was only possible if they were using an Android device.

Apple Pay-only payment apps
There are some apps such as Kris+ and currently missing-in-action XNAP that don’t accept credit card details directly. These apps only work with Google Pay for Android devices and Apple Pay for Apple devices.
While it doesn’t matter for most cards since they can be added to your Google Pay or Apple Pay wallet for use with such apps, there are cases where this is useful. For instance, CIMB and DCS cards cannot currently be added to Apple Pay. To sidestep this, you are now able to first add those cards to Amaze, then add Amaze to Apple Pay to use those cards on such apps. Amaze’s S$1,000 fee-free limit still applies of course, and DCS cards exclude Amaze transactions so it’s probably not an ideal use case.
Another common use case would be allowing for the use of Citi Rewards on Kris+. Citi Rewards has a clause in the terms and conditions that exclude transactions made using mobile wallets, leading to transactions made via Apple Pay or Google Pay to be quite contentious when it comes to rewards. Adding the card via Amaze ensures that this clause is not flouted.
More quality of life improvements
Having the card on Apple Pay also means one can opt to leave the physical card at home. I use a small cardholder as a wallet where space is a premium, and getting rid of one entire card to carry is more pleasant that it sounds. Also, there have been occasions I go overseas without remembering to bring the physical card, but a phone is something I’d never forget to bring.
There are also reports that the physical card, specifically the purple Founder Edition version issued to earlier Amaze users, has issues with contactless payments overseas. Being able to use it on your Apple Watch or iPhone should solve this issue.
We are in the future!
It’s a little amusing perhaps that the addition of Apple Pay as a feature can be something newsworthy, but it is indeed a glaring omission that has been a sticking point for many users for a commonly used card. Better late than never, they say, and I’m personally glad this is finally a thing.
