5 Ways to Get Extra Rebates, Cashback and Miles For Groceries at Cold Storage or Giant

Live near Cold Storage or Giant supermarkets? You may find this article more useful than the one I have on getting more rewards for NTUC FairPrice spending. Here’s how to get more rebates, cashback, and miles when you do your groceries at Cold Storage or Giant.

There are some ways that are less obvious than others, so I suggest giving this a read if you market often at these supermarkets. With the right promos, even Cold Storage groceries can be more affordable than other low-cost grocers.

Use DBS yuu and yuu App, duh

The most obvious way to get lots of savings (or miles) would be to use the DBS yuu Card and yuu App. This shouldn’t be new to anyone, but for the uninitiated, this credit card gives as much as 36X yuu Points for purchases done at Cold Storage and Giant which is worth a staggering 18% in rebates or 10 miles per dollar.

Buy Cold Storage / Giant vouchers

A longstanding practice for those who find it difficult to meet DBS yuu’s S$800 monthly minimum spend would be to buy Dairy Farm vouchers from Cold Storage and Giant outlets. Such purchases will not earn the 1X yuu Point awarded by the yuu App, but have so far earned the DBS yuu’s bonus earn rate of 9X or 35X yuu Points. Shoppers can then earn the 1X yuu Point awarded by the yuu App when they purchase items using their vouchers.

So even if you don’t spend S$800 a month on groceries, you can simply buy S$800 worth of vouchers within a month, get your 18% rebate or 10 miles per dollar, then spend these vouchers over the next few months.

Shop during promo weekends

For quite a few months now, Cold Storage and Giant have been running promos with DBS to offer discounts when you pay with DBS cards on weekends:

If you use DBS yuu (which you should), you can also earn 18% rebates or 10 miles per dollar that the card offers.

Redeem discounted vouchers in yuu App, and make use of free discount vouchers

Periodically, yuu App releases discounted Cold Storage or Giant vouchers. Instead of the usual 2,000 points for a S$10 voucher, the promotional rate is just 1,000 points.

Also, the yuu App offers free discount vouchers from time to time, often offering S$2 to S$6 discounts if you can meet a minimum spend of S$15 to S$60. It represents pretty decent discounts on top of other promos and your DBS yuu’s earn rate.

Stack multiple yuu discount vouchers

Perhaps what is less obvious (to me, at least, because I only just discovered this recently) is that these discount vouchers can stack.

I recently tried using a S$6 off S$60 discount voucher at Cold Storage, before scanning a S$6 off S$50 discount voucher expecting it would fail. Surprisingly, both discount vouchers stacked:

That’s a total of 20% discount off my S$60 worth of groceries, and this isn’t counting my DBS yuu rewards yet! Counting my 18% rebates on the remaining payable amount, it is a total of 34.4% discount and rebates on my purchase which I suspect puts even the cheapest neighbourhood supermarket to shame.

I subsequently tried a S$3 off S$25 discount voucher plus a S$2 off S$15 discount voucher at Giant and both stacked:

It seems to me that the vouchers will only stack if they are different, meaning two S$6 off S$60 vouchers wouldn’t work, but S$6 off S$60 and S$6 off S$50 did. You can also use vouchers from different yuu accounts regardless of which yuu ID is scanned at checkout. It thus helps to have many players in this game, so it is worth having a yuu account for each of your family members.
