Nerfed: Mari Credit Card to Stop Offering 5% Shopee Coins From 23rd January

Update: Mari Credit Card now gives a reduced 3% Shopee Coins earn rate. The good news is that there is still no minimum or maximum spend applicable.

In a new set of terms and conditions, MariBank has effectively nerfed the Mari Credit Card. The promotional earn rate of 5% Shopee Coins will last until 23rd January 2025. Seems like the digital bank has claimed the first nerf of 2025 already and we haven’t even seen 2024 off yet!

No min nor max spend for 5% Shopee Coins

Mari Credit Card’s 5% earn rate on Shopee purchases has been something I thought to be very useful. Cashback cards with higher earn rates tend to impose a minimum spend amount per month while Mari Credit Card did not, allowing smaller shoppers to get 5% rebates easily.

Another compelling feature of the Mari Credit Card is that it does not cap the 5% earn rate, making it uniquely useful for big spenders on the Shopee platform. Without this feature after the nerf kicks in, Mari Credit Card will be a lot less attractive, so it begs the question whether MariBank would announce new features to make up for this nerf. If you have large purchases to make on the shopping website, you have about a month until late January 2025 to take advantage of Mari Credit Card’s 5% earn rate. Remember to use Instant Checkout with Mari Credit Card to get your 5% rebate, and note that the rebate is in the form of Shopee Coins. See the terms and conditions here.

1.7% cashback for local transactions and 3% cashback for overseas spend

After the nerf, Mari Credit Card will continue to offer 1.7% cashback on local transactions. At this rate, it offers the highest unlimited cashback rate tied only with UOB Absolute. 1.7% is a relatively low rate, but it is about what you expect from a card that does not require you to spend on specific categories.

It will also continue to offer 3% cashback until 31st December 2025, though MariBank charges an overseas transaction fee of 3%. I have confirmed with MariBank that the 3% cashback is on the transaction amount excluding transaction fees, which is why the cashback does not fully negate the overseas transaction fee.
