If your Amex card was issued by a bank, you still qualify as a new cardholder. For example, if you have a UOB Amex Card or DBS Amex Card, you still count as a new customer to Amex as long as you do not have a Basic Amex Card.

1.5% cashback on transactions except Grab top-ups
No exclusions (except Grab top-ups)… as long as you get to charge your transaction to an Amex card
The OG of no exclusion cards, Amex True Cashback has been giving its cashback on anything you charge to the card. Anything, that is, until they made a rare move to exclude Grab top-ups some 2 years ago.
Everything else is fair game, be it insurance, road tax, school fees… provided the transaction accepts American Express. Before you ask — no, AXS does not accept American Express, so this card wouldn’t work there.
Nonetheless, with cashback credited in the same statement month, this card is very fuss-free to use — after makig your spend, your cashback offsets the amount payable, and there is nothing after that for you to redeem or use up.
Pay at hawker stalls with Amex Pay
If you’re paying for your meals at hawker stalls and see a QR code, chances are you’d see an American Express logo. This means you can use Amex Pay to pay for your hawker meals using your Amex card.
With the death disappearance of XNAP, this would be useful for those who have been looking for a way to pay for such expenses with a credit card to earn rewards on.
What to spend on?
You need to meet the minimum spend to qualify for rewards. Do note that there are transactions which are excluded. Read the terms and conditions carefully when applying.
Generally, retail transactions like buying stuff or dining out are very safe. Things like bill payments, education expenses and CardUp or ipaymy become a lot iffier and depends on the bank your card is from.
