1st July 2025: Amex CapitaCard to be Discontinued, CapitaStar App to Allow Mastercard Linkage

In an email sent to cardholders earlier this year, American Express announced the discontinuation of the Amex CapitaCard from 1st July 2025. At the same time, CapitaStar app will also allow Mastercard credit and debit cards to be linked to the app for payments from 1st July onwards.

Looks like Amex is out and Mastercard is in for CapitaStar’s preferred payment partner.

Discontinuation of Amex CapitaCard

Amex CapitaCard users will be able to continue using the card until 30th June 2025, after which the card and all associated supplementary cards will be cancelled.

The usual earn rate of 1X to 10X STAR$ (0.5% to 5% rebates) will continue to apply, though April 2025 will be the final month to qualify for the complimentary parking benefit. Cardholders who charge the required S$1,800 or S$2,400 to their Amex CapitaCard in April 2025 will enjoy Complimentary or Privileged parking in the month of June 2025, after which this benefit will cease.

Any outstanding balance or instalment plans on the card will be due and payable immediately upon the card’s discontinuation on 1st July 2025. If you have any credit balance, you should contact American Express and provide your bank details for a refund.

Amex Offers saved to the card will continue to work until end of June 2025, though note that rewards can take a few business days to be credited to your card. Rewards will not be credited from 1st July 2025, so do make sure you use your Amex Offers well before 30th June 2025 so that there is time for your rewards to be credited.

CapitaStar app to allow linkage of Mastercard

From 1st July 2025, CapitaStar app will allow the linkage of Mastercard credit and debit cards for payment at participating CapitaLand shops islandwide.

Scanning receipts will be a thing of a past and with this change, only payments made through CapitaStar app will earn STAR$. CapitaStar summarises the changes as such:

Payment MethodUntil 30th June 2025From 1st July 2025
Scan ReceiptsEarn STAR$ with minimum S$20 spend (by scanning receipt)❌ Discontinued
Linked Mastercard Credit or Debit CardNot available🆕 Earn STAR$ with minimum S$20 spend
eCapitaVoucherEarn STAR$ with minimum S$20 spend (by scanning receipt)🆕 Earn STAR$ with minimum S$10 spend
Linked DBS PayLah!Earn STAR$ with minimum S$20 spendEarn STAR$ with minimum S$20 spend
Linked ShopBack PayEarn STAR$ with minimum S$20 spendEarn STAR$ with minimum S$20 spend

There are a few pros and cons to this change. The downside would be that non-Mastercard credit cards will no longer be able to earn STAR$ with the CapitaStar app. You will still be able to use Visa or Amex cards at your favourite CapitaLand malls and earn their usual rewards, of course, but you will lose the ability to scan the receipts for additional STAR$. (Update: this may not be the case according to matt and bk from the Telegram chat)

Aside from not having to scan receipts anymore, a potential upside would be that Citi Rewards could soon see a new lease of life. Given that wallet apps like ShopBack Pay or FavePay have been converting offline transactions to online ones, it could well mean that Citi Rewards might soon be able to earn its 10X points or 4 miles per dollar rewards across the numerous CapitaLand shops that accepts payment via CapitaStar.

While Amex CapitaCard was a pretty interesting card back in the days (especially when GreenUP was a thing), it hasn’t been very compelling of late. A small number of people might be saddened by the loss of free parking, but the good chance of Citi Rewards working well with CapitaStar app from July 2025 onwards should benefit a lot more people (if it happens, that is).
