Is travel insurance necessary?

Frankly speaking, when I was much younger I never really saw the need for travel insurance. My overseas adventures have always gone well without major issues. I also mostly frequented nearby and familiar countries on a budget, and could get by self-insuring any problems that may crop up.

That was all before the pandemic, of course, and the risk of something going wrong is still pretty significant at this point of time. Also, my desire for peace of mind has gone up quite a bit, so travel insurance is something I now prioritise when it comes to making sure my holidays are as enjoyable as possible.
