Temporary Buff: CIMB Visa Signature Lowers Minimum Spend to S$600 (Until 31st October)
CIMB Visa Signature is having a 3-month buff: from 1st August to 31st October 2023, the monthly minimum spend requirement to get higher cashback is lowered to S$600. This is down from the usual S$800, and unlocks the card’s high 10% cashback rate.
High 10% cashback rate… with a few caveats
When cards advertise a high cashback rate, it’s usually accompanied with more than a few asterisks and fine print. Trust Card, for instance, proclaims a 21% cashback rate that isn’t attainable in real life. On the other hand, DBS yuu gives 17.5% cashback without much gimmicks or gotchas.
CIMB Visa Signature is in the middle of the two, but thankfully closer to DBS yuu. You can indeed get its 10% cashback rate in full, but to get there takes a bit of effort as I’ve explained in my review of the card:
A lowered minimum spend definitely makes the card more viable. Instead of clocking spend in 4 different categories to get the maximum 10% cashback, you just need to make spend in 3 categories.
Whether this improvement would displace other cashback cards, however, is another question. The buff is also only for 3 months, although I imagine they might extend it just to make CIMB Visa Signature a bit more competitive against other cards.
Personally, I might just use it for a month or two as a 10% card to do some online shopping, stock up on pet supplies, and perhaps buy some supermarket vouchers. Even if CIMB Visa Signature isn’t all that easy to use as a daily card, 10% is a great rate to do some planned purchases.
