Citi SMRT gives 5% on online transactions with an annual cap of S$12,000
For those who are unfamiliar with the card, Citi SMRT offers 5% on groceries, taxis, public transport rides, and online transactions if you hit S$500 of spend within a month. Despite the name, even those who don’t take public transportation often would find it a very relevant card.
It is particularly useful for online transactions because of its lack of a monthly limit unlike many high-earn cards. Instead, it just has an annual S$12,000 cap which means you can put relatively large transactions on this card and get as much as S$600 of cashback if you max out the annual limit.
Citi M1 card gives rebates on recurring M1 bills
Citi M1 lives up to its name of being relevant only to M1 users, and it gives 3% rebate on recurring M1 bills if your total spend is between S$300 to under S$600 within a month. It will give 10% rebate on recurring M1 bills if the total spend is S$600 or more.
Note though that the earn rate is capped at the first S$300 of recurring M1 charges. This means that if you somehow spend all S$600 on M1 recurring bills, you would only get the 10% earn rate on the first S$300 with the remaining amount getting 0.5% rebates. Perhaps it’s not all that relevant to M1 users after all.
Other Citi cards have better sign-up offers
While it’s good to see more cards having sign-up rewards, the welcome gifts for these two cards are currently not as attractive as other Citi cards.
There is a first 1,000 flash deal currently ongoing with a huge S$700 sign-up promo. What I hear is that the first 1,000 slots have not been confirmed, so there may still be some chance of getting the super upsized sign-up promo.
Even outside of the first 1,000, the usual sign-up gifts are generally bigger than what’s offered for Citi SMRT and Citi M1 cards. The latest update is the gifts will be reduced from 23rd August!
What to spend on?
You need to meet the minimum spend to qualify for rewards. Do note that there are transactions which are excluded. Read the terms and conditions carefully when applying.
Generally, retail transactions like buying stuff or dining out are very safe. Things like bill payments, education expenses and CardUp or ipaymy become a lot iffier and depends on the bank your card is from.
Do check out this article on what you can spend on to meet the minimum spend:
