Singapore Airlines Spontaneous Escapes For September 2024
From today until 31st August 2024, Singapore Airlines has once again rolled out its Spontaneous Escapes. As usual, there is 30% discount off the miles required to redeem certain flights in September 2024 as long as you book by 31st August while seats last.

The most tempting destination to me is Osaka in Business class with just 72,800 miles required and around S$100 of tax for a return trip:
At the time of writing, availability is dwindling fast but I think it should still be quite possible to book at least one leg of your journey in business and another in economy.
Regional destinations tend to feature heavily for Spontaneous Escapes, and since they’re pretty nearby, you can indeed have quite a spontaneous trip to one of the destinations. Notably, Taipei makes an appearance this month and 23,100 miles plus about S$85 of tax is quite reasonable for a return trip in Singapore Airlines’ economy class.

Calculating the Cost of Each Redemption
Generally, I put a cost to each mile to figure out whether a redemption makes sense. When you give up 6% cashback for 4 miles per dollar, each mile effectively costs you 1.5 cents. Under Spontaneous Escapes, a return flight to Taipei would be around S$346.50 (11,550 miles × 2 ways × 1.5¢). Don’t forget that taxes still apply, and for this journey the tax is around S$85. This brings the total cost to S$441.50.
Singapore Airlines sells a return flight to Taipei for S$394 on some dates next month, so it might not be worth it to use miles to book this flight even with the 30% discount under Spontaneous Escapes. The valuation can of course shift depending on things like your miles expiring soon, or if you have “done the right thing” and bought your miles at less than 1.5 cents each.
Going anywhere in September?
