Which option to pick?
Visa vs Amex
Between the Visa and Amex variants, the Amex is an easy pick. You get an extra 5,000 miles for meeting the spend requirement of S$800. However, there are two downsides because American Express isn’t as widely accepted as Visa and the Amex version does not provide complimentary lounge visits.
Both are non-issues in my opinion. With a relatively low S$800 requirement, it shouldn’t be too difficult a task to find enough spending to meet the minimum spend. Also, there is nothing stopping you from applying for another card that gives you lounge access such as Citi PremierMiles or even the Visa version of DBS Altitude as your second card after the Amex one.
Annual Fee
Whether to pay the first-year annual fee is also an easy calculation to make. Given that there are a few ways to buy miles for cheap, paying S$196.20 for 10,000 miles just isn’t very worth it. It translates to a cost of 1.96 cents per mile which is quite expensive.
Even if you’re someone who pays full price for business class tickets and can stand to save some money by using miles, you should be better off with one of the many other ways to buy miles at a cheaper rate. Those who wouldn’t pay a high premium for business class tickets should also naturally avoid paying a high fee for miles.

Even more options
If you have an annual income of S$120,000 and able to meet the higher S$4,000 spend requirement, the good news is that DBS Vantage’s highest 85,000 miles offer has been extended.
For those who prefer cashback, DBS has removed its S$388 offer for all but one card – DBS Live Fresh. DBS yuu is still the strongest cashback card yet, but for those who do more shopping would find the 6% cashback from DBS Live Fresh very useful. Besides, it’s the only DBS card left with a generous S$388 offer so grab it now when there’s still time:

DBS Live Fresh
Get 6% cashback on shopping and public transportation with S$800 minimum spend.
💱 0 forex fees
Spend at least S$800 within a month and get bonus 3.25% cashback on selected Asian currencies to offset the forex fees! Terms and conditions apply

What to spend on?
You need to meet the minimum spend to qualify for rewards. Do note that there are transactions which are excluded. Read the terms and conditions carefully when applying.
Generally, retail transactions like buying stuff or dining out are very safe. Things like bill payments, education expenses and CardUp or ipaymy become a lot iffier and depends on the bank your card is from.
Do check out this article on what you can spend on to meet the minimum spend:
