Which card to pick?

Maybank has a bunch of interesting cards with unique use cases. Maybank Family and Friends card is a strong 8% cashback card that should be fairly easy for most people to use when it comes to household expenses.

Maybank Platinum Visa is very useful for CardUp/ipaymy transactions, giving you cashback in excess of the fees charged by either service. This allows you to earn rewards on transactions such as income tax, renovation costs, or even your monthly mortgage.

For the miles folk, Maybank Horizon Visa offers 2.8 miles per dollar which isn’t a particularly strong rate, but this earn rate has no cap on foreign currency transactions. The earn rate is also good for airline tickets up to S$10,000 a month, something that more and more cards are not supporting.

Lastly, Maybank Barcelona’s 1.6% cashback isn’t an exciting rate, but it does not exclude education expenses so this is a great option for those who want to earn rewards on their school fees.

What to spend on?

You need to meet the minimum spend to qualify for rewards. Do note that there are transactions which are excluded. Read the terms and conditions carefully when applying.

Generally, retail transactions like buying stuff or dining out are very safe. Things like bill payments, education expenses and CardUp or ipaymy become a lot iffier and depends on the bank your card is from.
