Which Card Would I Pick?

Personally, I think the pick comes down to either the Ascend Card or the Amex Platinum Charge (not Credit).

KrisFlyer Ascend
Ascend is a straightforward pick if you just want something fuss-free. S$1,000 minimum spend is relatively low for 36,800 miles (or 26,800 for existing cardholders), and your annual fee is well worth paying for.

Even if you ignore the card perks, paying the S$343.35 annual fee for 36,800 miles is a pretty good deal. Getting S$50 off makes the miles buying price even more attractive – just under 0.8 cents per mile for new cardholders and 1.09 cents per mile for existing cardholders. But we shouldn’t ignore the perks! There is a free complimentary hotel stay and 4 lounge passes which makes this deal fantastic for new and existing cardholders alike.

Platinum Charge
The Amex Platinum Charge is a much more complicated card. If you just take the S$1,744 annual fee divided by the number of miles, the price is about 2.13 cents per mile for new cardholders and 2.32 for existing cardholders. That’s a pricey rate to buy your miles at, but Platinum Charge comes with a whole host of benefits and features.

The card offers S$1,354 of statement credits per year, and applying now means you will get one set in 2024, and another set in 2025. My own valuation of these statement credits is that they are worth about S$600 to S$800 per year, so you should be able to get at least S$1,200 back just from the statement credits alone. As long as you can make use of the statement credits, this makes your mile-buying price really, really cheap.

I’m also a happy Hilton Gold member thanks to the card, and its other benefits are too numerous to list here. If you want the best value and make sure you use at least some of the card features, the Amex Platinum is a very good deal for the first year. Just make sure you are able to hit the S$8,000 minimum spend.

What to spend on?

You need to meet the minimum spend to qualify for rewards while noting there are transactions which are excluded. Read the terms and conditions carefully when applying.

Generally, retail transactions like buying stuff or dining out are very safe. Things like bill payments, education expenses and CardUp or ipaymy become a lot iffier, but CardUp transactions are known to work for Amex sign-up promos, so that is an easy avenue to clock spend for this promo.

Do check out this article on what you can spend on to meet the minimum spend:
