Worth it?

For existing cardholders, this deal is essentially paying S$196.20 and spending S$1,000 for a suitcase and 10,000 bonus miles. 10,000 miles is worth around S$150, and since these miles are given in the form of HSBC Reward points, I would say they are worth a little more.

The bank states that the suitcase is worth S$680, though that seems highly inflated. I would place it closer to around S$200, which more or less covers the annual fee payment. Existing HSBC cardholders would hence be getting 10,000 bonus miles plus the TravelOne’s base earn rate for spending S$1,000, and that’s a great deal in my books.

Alternatively, HSBC cardholders can apply for other HSBC cards to get S$50 cashback with S$500 spend.

For new cardholders, the welcome offers for other HSBC cards are likely to be more attractive.

HSBC’s definition of “existing cardholder”

HSBC defines existing cardholders as those whose most recent HSBC card was approved more than 12 months ago, and have not cancelled any in the past 12 months.

For example, if you applied for HSBC Revolution in May 2025 (i.e. more than 12 months ago) and did not apply nor cancel any HSBC cards since then – yes, you can apply for the HSBC TravelOne card and qualify as an existing cardholder.

If you applied for HSBC Advance in November 2025 (i.e. within the past 12 months), you do not qualify as an existing cardholder for this promo.

What to spend on?

You need to meet the minimum spend to qualify for rewards. Do note that there are transactions which are excluded. Read the terms and conditions carefully when applying.

Generally, retail transactions like buying stuff or dining out are very safe. Things like bill payments, education expenses and CardUp or ipaymy become a lot iffier and depends on the bank your card is from.
