StanChart Promos: 45,000 Miles + S$140 Versus S$400 Compared

Update: extended until 2nd November 2023

Until 31st October 2023, StanChart has two blockbuster deals with SingSaver that you should definitely sign up for if you do not own a StanChart card for the past 12 months.

The first is StanChart Journey’s sign-up offer giving up to 45,000 miles plus S$140 cash, and the second is StanChart Simply Cash’s offer of S$400 cash. Both are fantastic sign-up deals for those new to StanChart.

💳 A new StanChart cardholder refers to those who do not currently have a principal StanChart credit card, and have not cancelled any in the past 12 months. Refer to promo’s terms and conditions for full details.

Which should you pick?

While it may seem straightforward to pick the miles offer if you like miles and pick cash if you aren’t into miles, value-seeking people might want to look through both promos to see which is a better deal for their first StanChart card in their lives (or at least in the past 12 months).

I’ll compare the two offers for those who are undecided which to pick.

For StanChart Journey’s promo, I would advise going for the fee waiver option which gives 35,000 miles. Paying the S$194.40 annual fee for 10,000 miles probably isn’t worth it for most people.

For an easy deal, it goes without saying that the Simply Cash promo is much simpler to achieve with its lower spend requirement. It’s a pretty straightforward affair to get the card, spend S$500 quickly and be done with it.

If you can’t meet the S$3,000 spend requirement of the Journey promo, getting StanChart’s S$400 is your only choice, and it’s a really good promo.

Gives 1.2 miles per dollar on local transactions, 2 miles per dollar on foreign transactions, and 3 miles per dollar on online groceries, transportation, and food delivery merchants

If you have a larger amount of expenses to the tune about S$3,000, Journey might not necessarily be the default choice.

When you compare the spend requirements of both promos, there is an extra S$2,500 of spend required for StanChart Journey’s promo. Aside from a few categories which earn 3 miles per dollar with the Journey card, most spend would earn only 1.2 miles per dollar.

If the amounts spent are something you can put on a 4 miles per dollar card, the opportunity cost is 2.8 miles per dollar. At 6 miles per dollar (hi, UOB Lady’s), the opportunity cost is 4.8 miles per dollar.

In essence, you could sign up for the StanChart Simply Cash card, spend S$500 before spending the remaining S$2,500 with a 4/6 miles per dollar card. In some situations, that may make more sense.

For the sake of comparison, we can take a look at a 5% cashback card for the remaining S$2,500 of spend:

Your valuation of miles impacts the decision whether to go for the Journey promo. The more you value miles (i.e. you are able to use them effectively and value business class flights), the more the Journey promo would make sense.

If we take a more conservative valuation of miles, you start to see that going with StanChart Simply Cash and a 6 miles per dollar card would be better. Of course, do note that it is going to be harder to earn 6 miles per dollar on S$2,500.

At even lower valuations of miles, picking Simply Cash and another high-earn cashback card becomes the better choice.

Conclusion

In short:

Those who can only meet S$500 of spend requirement

  • Get the Simply Cash promo, and it’s a great deal.

Those who can meet S$3,000 of spend requirement

  • If you don’t want miles or value miles lowly (<1 cents each): Simply Cash + cashback card
  • If you value miles conservatively and confident of earning 6 miles per dollar: Simply Cash + UOB Lady’s
  • If you value miles higher (≥ 1.25 cents each): Journey

I know it seems like an obvious thing that people who value miles should go for the Journey card and those who don’t should go for the Simply Cash promo, but the results would have been quite different if the Journey card’s spend promo was say S$5,000 instead. In that situation, the opportunity cost of using the Journey’s 1.2 miles per dollar earn rate becomes larger, and one would be better off with the Simply Cash and a 4/6 miles per dollar card.

Either way, both are great deals, and your bigger mistake would be to let choice paralysis take over and signing up for neither. Subscribe for more deals (and deals analysis)!
