A great deal that works even for existing cardholders
Most banks do not offer sign-up rewards for existing cardholders, so this is a rare opportunity to enjoy a promo by picking up an additional card with HSBC.
Paying an annual fee of S$196.20 for 21,600 bonus miles is an excellent deal, working out to be around 0.91 cents per mile.
Moreover, HSBC Rewards points are one of the most valuable types of bank points in my books because of their ability to be transferred to many airlines instantly and without conversion fees. You could transfer your points to EVA Air and book a Singapore Airlines business class flight to Japan for just 40,000 miles. If you could buy every single mile at 0.91 cents each, this flight would translate to just S$364 ignoring taxes.
What to spend on?
You need to meet the minimum spend to qualify for rewards. Do note that there are transactions which are excluded. Read the terms and conditions carefully when applying.
Generally, retail transactions like buying stuff or dining out are very safe. Things like bill payments, education expenses and CardUp or ipaymy become a lot iffier and depends on the bank your card is from.
