New: HeyMax Releases Miles Flight Search and Flight Tracking Features

Update: Singapore Airlines and EVA Air have been added to the list of supported airlines

HeyMax has just released a new feature that aims to make finding award flights easier across different airlines. Dubbed “Miles Flight Search”, the feature does what the name suggests: HeyMax can now search up flights they are able to redeem using their miles.

Searching for flights

Using the feature is easy enough – simply launch the HeyMax app and tap the new Aeroplane tab in the middle of the bottom navigation bar. There is currently no desktop version, unfortunately.

After which, enter the destination you are interested in, the travel date, number of travellers as well as desired cabin class.

Flights with the best value

The feature helpfully highlights the best available flight, if any. For instance, my search for Hong Kong shows Cathay Pacific’s flight on the top of the list, but it also tells you that booking through Qatar Privilege Club gives you the best value:

Supported Programs

The feature currently supports 15 frequent flyer programmes (FFP), but Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and EVA Air Infinity MileageLand are notably not supported.

HeyMax has mentioned that they are working on including these airlines’ FFPs.

Flight Tracking

Within the same tab, HeyMax now also supports flight tracking. You have to manually add your flight details and the app tries to make it seamless by offering two ways:

1. Forwarding your flight booking email to HeyMax via email
2. Uploading a screenshot of your flight booking receipt

I could not get 1 to work, though 2 worked quite well… that is if you actually manage to upload the screenshot. Those on iOS will find that it is currently quite troublesome becaue you have to first screenshot your flight details, save it as JPG or PNG to your Files app, then upload the screenshot. They need to let users pick whether to upload the screenshot from Files or directly from their Photo Gallery, something they told me they will consider including.

Once the screenshot is uploaded, the app seems to have little issue adding the flight details:

The app offers up deals from travel portals, and HeyMax tells me that there’d be push notifications for boarding gate and flight time changes.

I’ll have to play around more with this feature to see if it’s worth the effort uploading my flight details, especially when Google does flight tracking automatically from my flight booking emails. It’s very difficult to beat automatic, and Google uses Live Notifications which HeyMax does not currently support.

My features wishlist

When you are exploring FFPs beyond just KrisFlyer, flight search tools like this that help you search for award flights are much welcomed, especially since HeyMax is providing this for the fantastic price of free.

There are a few features I would like to see happen, however, and the first would be having open-ended search. For travellers with flexible schedules and destinations with sparse flight availability, having to check different dates one by one is cumbersome. It’s a lot more convenient to display the available flights over a time period (like Seats.aero does).

Heck, I’m not even that particular about destinations, so giving me a list of good value redemptions is preferable to me having to look at flight availability for each destination.

Desktop support is also sorely lacking here. Checking things on a smartphone app is nifty on the go, but serious travel planning is best done on a computer. This could just be me being very millennial.

Lastly, EVA Air Infinity MileageLand not being supported is certainly quite a letdown. Given how the programme can be used to book Singapore Airlines flights for as much as 26% cheaper, having the ability to easily look up flight availability would be a very good thing to have.

The HeyMax team has informed me that many of these features are currently in the works and we can look forward to the tool being more useful over time.

HeyMax has certainly grown quite a lot, starting life as an MCC lookup tool and evolving into the miles equivalent of ShopBack. With the addition of such tools (especially for free), it is becoming more useful for those looking to maximise their rewards and points.
