Nerfed/Buffed: UOB Preferred Platinum Visa Introduces Category Caps But Adds SimplyGo For 4 Miles Per Dollar
UOB has announced a revision to the UOB Preferred Platinum Visa and it’s pretty bad news: from 1st October 2025, the card will introduce category spend caps of S$600 per month for each of its contactless payment and online categories.
At the same time, the overall monthly cap has increased slightly to S$1,200 per month from the current S$1,110. From 28th August 2025, the card will also earn 4 miles per dollar on SimplyGo transactions.
Category cap of S$600 for contactless payments and online transactions
The main change (and nerf) that is happening to the UOB Preferred Platinum Visa is the imposition of category caps for both the contactless payments and online transactions categories.
Currently, both categories have a combined cap of 4,440 miles per month which is reached with S$1,110 of spend. From 1st October 2025, both categories will have their own cap of 2,400 miles.
| Category | Current Cap (before 1st October 2025) |
New Cap (from 1st October 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Contactless Payments | Shared Cap: Bonus UNI$2,000 (S$1,110 spend) |
Bonus UNI$1,080 (S$600 spend) |
| Online Transactions | Bonus UNI$1,080 (S$600 spend) |
While the overall spend cap has increased, this is likely going to be a nerf for many cardholders. Until the change happens, UOB Preferred Platinum Visa cardholders can simply charge any amount via contactless payment or using their card for online transactions and get 4 miles per dollar up to the S$1,110 spend cap. Someone with more in-person spending can max out the entire S$1,110 spend cap with contactless payments, while others who shop online more can do the same with the online transactions category.
In short, you can assign any amount of spend to either category as long as you do not exceed an overall cap of 4,440 miles earned (reached with S$1,110 of spend). From 1st October 2025, you will stop earning 4 miles per dollar after earning 2,400 miles in either category which is maxed out at S$600 of spend.

SimplyGo will earn 4 miles per dollar from 28th August 2025 onwards
The good news is that SimplyGo transactions will earn 4 miles per dollar on UOB Preferred Platinum Visa from 28th August 2025 onwards. As usual, the earn rate of UOB Preferred Platinum Visa will be UNI$10 on S$5 of spend (or 20 miles per S$5).
It may be nearly impossible to spend S$5 on train or bus rides within a single day, which is why UOB will be totalling up all the SimplyGo transactions within a calendar month for the calculation of miles.
For instance, if you spend S$4.12 every single day for a 30-day month, your total spend is S$123.60. UOB Preferred Platinum Visa will award you with 480 miles (S$120 × 4 miles per dollar) on the 7th day of the following month.
A buff or nerf depending on your spending habits
Many would rightfully see this as a nerf, losing the ability to put up to S$1,110 entirely on contactless/online transactions. UOB Visa Signature, though itself recently nerfed, is perhaps the answer for those who need more spend cap for contactless transactions each month.
On the other hand, I think there are quite a few who would actually be better off with such a change. Smaller spenders, for instance, are unlikely to be affected by a S$600 category cap, and they now get a card for 4 miles per dollar on SimplyGo transaction. I count myself as one such person, actually, because it is quite rare for me to clock beyond a few hundred dollars on the UOB Preferred Platinum Visa each month, and getting 4 miles per dollar on bus/MRT is actually pretty difficult.
In any case, there are other good mile cards available, and Scoot recently just introduced award flights. The miles game has had quite a few bad news this year, but as self-proclaimed Captain of Team Value I certainly wouldn’t write off miles just because of a few bad knocks.
